Leonardo’s Pizza Palace Opens in Carlton

The team behind Ramblr and Leonard’s House of Love just wanted it as retro-italian as it should. From Brick archways, Terrazzo floors, Heavy timber beams and wrought iron fittings. The team haven’t had to recreate the interior of the former home of Da Salvatore Pizza by the Metre as Nick Stanton says “We were up against some pretty big operators for this place. The main reason we got it is we didn’t want to knock the place down and turn it into a modern, new-age venue.” Moreover, this “Italian-American” menu is an inspiration yet evolving with other influences. Leonardo’s Pizza Palace opens Tuesdays through Sundays at 29 Grattan Street, Carlton.

Surviving Your First Stint In Hospo

“I fell in love with it”, Chef Scott Pickett says. At a young age of 14 with a job at a winery restaurant near his home in McLaren Vale, South Australia. He’d go straight to the restaurant after school to scrub dishes.

In the early days, there wasn’t a job that Pickett didn’t do. “I’d do the accounts, the payroll, the super, the bills, the ordering, the cooking, the cleaning – everything,” he says.  And while he was working at the restaurant until midnight seven days a week, his wife was at home, running the household and caring for their two children, then aged five and three. He is very much grateful for all the skills he acquired at The Point in Albert Park before launching his very own business.

In doing the basics well as his philosophy, Pickett adds, “We smile, and we look after our guests. We try to make sure that our product is of the highest quality.”

Designed by local architects Jackson Clement Burrows, the new Mercedes me Melbourne concept store is unlike any other venue in the city.

The first NSW franchise of popular South Korean brand NeNe Chicken opened at Macquarie Centre on December 10, with queues of customers lining up to sample one of the 1000 tasting boxes that were given away.

It was a successful first day for a brand that had previously not existed in the state — and an impressive start for first-time business owners Fan and Howard.

Tucks Ridge: New and Improved

Experience
The vibe here is fun and fresh with a light and bright newly renovated cellar door and restaurant, but don’t be fooled, the wines are still some of the best you’ll find in Mornington. Tastings are detailed and informative, with knowledgeable staff who like to keep things casual. Now owned by the crew next door at Montalto, there’s a great synergy between wine tasting and dining, which makes for a relaxed and enjoyable afternoon.

“We really wanted to create a place that’s somewhere you want to lose hours in,” says Daragh Kan, founder of the 100 Burgers Group (Welcome to Thorbury, Belle’s Hot Chicken and Mr Burger), which took over the Carlton institution late last year. “If you’re a uni student who rocks up for a quick bite, [you’ll get] so comfortable you’ll skip the next class. Before you know it, uni’s over.”
